This creek side landscape project in North Vancouver was designed for a client who wanted their broken and sunken side yard stairs replaced, and an old concrete slab patio rebuilt with something much nicer. We used 24 x 36" flamed basalt stone for the patio and walkway, and matching basalt treads for the stairs. There was a lot of excavation on this one! The old stairs were built on soft clay fill and shifted off to the side over time. We removed a few feet of that, compacted the soil, and built our way out with well compacted road base over heavy filter cloth and bi-directional geogrid to keep everything in place for decades to come.
